The human life cycle contains numerous periods of transformation.  Many of these transitional periods have associated community rituals, and some do not.  The transformative journey is a hallmark of the human experience and a foundational element of storytelling. Join us at this weekend writing retreat, and gather with Friends to explore in writing the internal and external journeys that have changed your life.    

As the editor of Western Friend magazine, Caitlin receives writing from Friendly contributors throughout the West and beyond. She sees a hunger for people to come together to write and explore life experiences, and knows that writers enjoy receiving constructive feedback and attention to their work. Come to Quaker Center to explore the art of essay and personal memoir while spending time in fellowship.

About the facilitators.

Casey Chaffin is a freelance journalist and essayist. She is an experienced facilitator of community-based writing groups, making writing an accessible tool for expression and connection. The desire to tell stories in community with others drives her work. She lives in Portland, OR with her wife and a large orange tabby cat.

Caitlin Churchill is the Editor and Executive Director of Western Friend magazine, a publication dedicated to facilitating connections among Friends in the West. Before heading Western Friend, she served as the Communications Director for Right Sharing of World Resources and held various roles with Quaker Voluntary Service—two organizations close to her heart. Caitlin began her Quaker career 13 years ago cooking at Friends Camp in South China, Maine, before moving cross-country to work at Breitenbush Hot Springs in the Cascade Mountains. It was there that she met her life partner, Rory. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with Rory and their toy poodle, Penny.
